Paterson Joseph

Paterson is one of the UK's finest actors and his debut play as writer SANCHO: AN ACT OF REMEMBRANCE was initially produced at the Arcola Theatre (as a co-production with the Oxford Playhouse) in Autumn 2013 and went on to have two further tours in the US and a production at Wilton's Music Hall in 2018.

The play, published by Oberon, explores the life of Charles Ignatius Sancho, the first black person of African origin to vote in Britain whose life was full of surprising, moving and funny twists.

Paterson's latest novel THE SECRET DIARIES OF CHARLES IGNATIUS SANCHO was published in 2022 and has since won the Royal Society of Literature’s prestigious Christopher Bland prize.

Paterson has developed a new performance based on his recently published novel which he will be performing at the Lyric Hammersmith on 22nd – 23rd February 2024. SANCHO AND ME: FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY is part-biography and part-dramatized readings of sections from the novel. Think Dickens with a modern twist!

His first book Julius Caesar and Me: Exploring Shakespeare's African Play was released in 2018 by Bloomsbury.
