Charles Allen (1940-2020) was the author of a number of bestselling books about India and the colonial experience elsewhere. His later books took him ever deeper into the early history of the sub-continent; in particular, India's neglected history as the fountainhead of Buddhism. A traveller, historian and master storyteller, he was one of the great chroniclers of India.
