Dr MacKenzie Common was born in Newfoundland, Canada, and spent much of her childhood in North Bay, Ontario. At 21, she moved to the UK, where she lived for twelve years. She holds a PhD in Law and has worked as an expert on human rights issues, particularly in social media content moderation, and has experience in international law, including work at a war crimes tribunal in The Hague. She currently resides in Alberta, Canada, with her partner, two children, and a pug, and enjoys swimming, paddleboarding, travel, comedy, and chocolate 

Her debut novel, for young adult readers, The Lives of Desperate Girls, was shortlisted in the YA category of the Crime Writers of Canada's Arthur Ellis Awards 2018. Her debut novel for adults, The Six Murders of Daphne St Clair, was published in 2025. Her follow-up, The Scholars, is published in 2026.
