Eric Partridge was born in New Zealand in 1894 and attended both Queensland and Oxford universities. Among his publications on language are A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, A Dictionary of Clichés, Shakespeare's Bawdy, A Dictionary of the Underworld, Origins: An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English, Comic Alphabets, The Gentle Art of Lexicography and A Dictionary of Catchphrases. He died in 1979.
