Finlay J. Macdonald was born in the Outer Hebrides in 1926, and enjoyed a long and successful career as a BBC talks producer, and then as a television director. He co-founded the quarterly Gaelic magazine, Gairm, in 1951 with Derick Thompson and served as its Chief Editor until 1964. One of his most successful books was Crowdie and Cream and Other Stories. Finlay J. Macdonald died in 1987.
